Chapter 19 &adobe


1.What does it means that Ishmael had to be reinstated into the normal society?
It meant that Ishmael had to not be a child soldier anymore, and had to be normal like he was before.

2.Why do you think the 2 weeks felt longer than the 8 months at Benin home?
I think that the 2 weeks felt longer than the 8 months at the Benin home because he was not used to being with a normal family.

3.tell me a time where you felt like time was so long. Why
One time I was babysitting, and i was exhausted, all I wanted to do was sleep. I was only 3 hours but It felt like 10 !

4.Why do you think he survived the war?
I think he survived the war because he was so brainwashed and driven to kill. He was convinced that the people he was fighting killed his family.

5.Would you want to be the only survivor from your family?
No, i would want my entire family to survive with me.

6.List the items that he packed in his plastic bag.
He had a pair of sneakers, four Tshirts, three shorts, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a bottle of Vaseline lotion, a Walkman and some cassettes, two long sleeve shirts, and two pairs of pants and a tie.

7.What happen with Mambu? Why do you think that his family doesn’t want him?
Mambu went back to the front lines, because his family refused to take him in. I think they refused to take him in because they thought he was traumatized and probably violent and turned crazy.

8.Can you or someone you know relate to mambu? Give me an example
No, i personally have never met someone like Mambu.

9.Tell me time where you had to leave and you never you will never see your friends again.
A time I had to leave and never see my friends again was in 8th grade. They school found out i was not living in the district. I had to move and I didn't see my friends from about 2 years.

10.How does Ishmael feel about Ester. What did he want to tell her but never did?
Ishmael really like Esther, he feels comfortable with sharing his past with her, They earned each others trust. He loved her but never told her.

11.When his uncle picked him up, how did he treat him?
His uncle treated him nicely. He welcomed him like a chief.

12.Described how Ishmael was welcomed into the family.
First all his cousins welcomed him by hugging him, then they all ate. His aunt served cassava leaves with chicken. Eating chicken to them is only served on very special occasions.

13.What do you think he is thinking about his living situation now? Who does he share a room with?
I think Ishmael is not used to his living situation, he is gradually getting used to it though. He shares a room with Allie and his roommate.

14.Who took him to sneak out and where did they go?
Allie took him to sneak out. They went to go dance at a pub.

15.How were everyone dressed, how is that very different from what he is use to.
The boys were dressed with ironed pants, and tucked in shirts. The girls wore beautiful flowered dresses and high heels.

16.How were the girls dancing to him?
The girls danced very close to the boys.

17.What memory came back to him during dancing?
A memory of a town they had attacked during a school dance, he saw blood cover the dance, cries of teachers, and students, you could see the blood cover the dance floor.

18.What does upline mean?
Upline is a krio word mostly used in Freetown to refer to the backwardness of the inner country, its inhabitants, and their mannerisms.

19.What were the interviews for?
The interviews were for two children to be sent to the United Nations in New York, in America, to talk about the lives of children in Sierra Leone and what can be done about it.

20.How are they changing the way Ishmael is?
They are changing the way Ishmael is by making him a better talker.

21.Who is Dr. Tamba?
Dr. Tamba is the main person preparing them, for when they go to New York.

22.Did he get his Visa?
yes.

23.Where is he off to now??
Ishmael is off to New York to talk about what he went through.

Inhabitants: a person or animal that inhabits a place, esp. as a permanent resident

Some animals like Giraffes are inhabitants at a zoo.



Apprentices: a person who works for another in order to learn a trade

In the show The Apprentice, Donald Trump was looking for an apprentice.



Congested: to fill to excess; overcrowd or overburden; clog

The restaurant had to call a plumber because their sink was congested.



Shuffled: to walk without lifting the feet or with clumsy steps and a shambling gait

The penguin shuffled as they were being fed.



Marvelous: superb; excellent; great

The cheesecake that Richard made turned out marvelous, not only did it look pretty it tasted great !



Possessed: spurred or moved by a strong feeling, madness, or a supernatural power

In the exorcist the girl became possessed.



Intricate: having many interrelated parts or facets; entangled or involved

Some puzzles are very intricate. When they are intricate , they are very hard to complete.






Uncertainty:the state of being uncertain; doubt; hesitancy

When gambling their is a big uncertainty of whether your guess is going to be right.











transparent:having the property of transmitting rays of light through its substance so that bodies situated beyond or behind can be distinctly seen

Chapter 18&adobe


1.Why does Ishmael believe he has nothing to live for anymore?

He believes he has nothing to live for because all of his family is dead.


2.How does Ester treat Ishmael? What does she do to comfort him?

Esther is really nice to Ishmael, she gives him her full amount of attention, and says things to try ad make him feel better.


3.Who is Abigail? Describe her

Abigail is his Ishmael's ex girlfriend.


4.Who are the visitors that came to the center to visit? Describe their appearance

The visitors were from the European Commission, the UN, UNICEF, and several NGOs.


5.Do you think these visitors made him nervous?

I think these visitors did make him nervous, but it seemed as if he was exited too.


6.What did Esther want Ishmael to do for the talent show?

Esther wanted him to sing reggae songs.


7.What did the Mr. Kamara tell Ishmael after the event?

Mr. Kamara asked Ishamael if he would like to be spokesperson for the center. He also told him that him and his friends really impressed him.


8.What would he tell people at gatherings in Freetown?

He would tell the people from Freetown about child soldiering and that it should stop.


9.Who do you think Ishmael felt when he saw Mohamad? And why?

I think Ishamael felt happy, he finally had someone he could talk about memories with.


10.Who is Tommy? Describe.

Tommy is his uncle that he has never met or seen, but only heard of.


11.What does “repatriated” mean?

It is a term used to describe the process of reuniting ex-child soldiers with their former communities.


12.Describe Tommy as he walks inside and first meets Ishmael.

Tommy was very happy, so happy he was crying. He seemed like he was genuinly happy to see Ishamael

13.Tell me a time where you reunited with someone you haven’t seen for a long time. What was it like.

I was recently reunited with my grandparents from a year of not talking to them. It was ok, i felt releieved.


14.How often was Tommy going to visit?

Tommy said he was going to visit every weekend.


15.Why do you think Ishmael would feel guilty if he told his friends about his uncle?

He said he would feel guilty because non of his friends have any family left, and he didnt want to make them

feel bad.


16.Why did Ishmael love the walks with his uncle? Why were those walks important to him

He loved walks with his uncle because they gave him a chance to talk about his childhood about growing up

with his father and older brother.


17.How would you feel meeting your new family in his situation?

I would feel like a have a brand new start, and try to make the best of it since i woul dof had nothing else left.


18.Where does uncle live? Describe it

His uncle lived in New England Ville, it was a hilly area in the western part of Freetown.


19.Describe his aunt.

His aunt was a short woman, with very dark skin, round cheekbones, and bright eyes.


20.How do you think she feels about Ishmael coming to stay with them?

I think she is open to the idea, she is welcoming into her home and being nice about it.


21.What did Ishmael learn about his grandfather?

He learned his grandfather had many wives.


22.Tell me one thing you learned about your family.

I havent learned anything yet, but I know I will soon.

Bob Marley sings reggae, many people love his music.

This little boy eats unhealthy food continually, and because of that he is now overwieght.




Concerns: to relate to; be connected with; be of interest or importance to; affect


Many peoples concerns are about war.





Reuniting: to unite again, as after separation.


Many of men and woman who fight for the country get to reunite with their families after a long time.






Repatriated: to bring or send back


Some men or women who go into war die, after that they are repatriated to their loved ones.
