Chapter 21&adobe









1. What gives him a tingling sensation in his belly?

Walking on a moving sidewalk in the Amsterdam Airport gave him a tingling sensation.


2. What has he never seen so many of?

He has never seen so many white people dragging their bags in every direction.


3. Describe his school back home. How is it different to SBTA

In his school from back home he had to help his teacher grow crops in their farm gardens, it was the only way for teacher who haven't gotten paid to make a living for themselves. SBTA is way better, actually every school in the

U.S.A is. We have materials we need and are not crowded in a little tiny room.


4. What did the kids help their teacher with? How much do teachers get paid in his country?

They helped their teachers grow crops, they did not get paid for years.


5. How come no one sat close to him or Mohamed?

No one sat next to him or Mohamed because they knew they were child soldiers, and thought they were going to snap at any minute.


6. Would you be nervous to be friends with them? Why or why not?

Yes I would be nervous, because First of all they would be really weird because of all they went through, second of all I do not want to risk making friends with some one who is probably going to snap.


7. What day was it that the loud sound went off in his city?

The day was March 25, 1997.


8. What was the cause of the noise? Why

The cause of the noise was gunshots erupting around the State House and the House of Parliament.


9. What did the newly freed prisoner do?

The newly freed prisoner was given a gun and some wen to the houses of the judges or lawyers who sentenced them and killed them and their families, or if they were not there they would burn their houses.


10. What do you think about that?

I think that this is a corrupt city !


11. How is there prison system different from US?

Well I do not think It is really different because criminal get sentenced to time in prison, but I think that the security at prisons would be way better, and not let the prisoners be free.


12. How would you free about living in Freetown when all this is happening?

I would be devastated and probably try to escape also, the chances of me dying trying to escape and my living in

Free town are the same.


13. How did the city turn in lawlessness?

The city turned lawlessness because AFRC which was a group of SLA a group of Sierra Leone Army officers overthrow the democratically elected president Tejan Kabbaj.


14. Tell me what you think life would be like if we had no laws and people handled their own troubles? Would you want to live there?
I think that people would be doing whatever they wanted, People would probably kill each other just like in Freetown.

15. What did rebels do to the banks?

They stole the money.


16. What did the secret market do?

They would sell things like food double the price that they would sell it at the store.


17. What did the rebels order over the megaphones

They ordered everyone to put their food down and put their hands behind their back and get on the floor.


18. What were happening to the civilians, give me examples.

Civilians were dying and going crazy !


19. What happened to Mohamed?

Nothing, he as left behind at Freetown at Ishmael's uncles house.


20. How long did the gun shots last?

They lasted 5 months.


21. What were people eating most of the days

They soaked raw rice with sugar and plain gari with salt, Ishmael bought palm oil,rice, fish and salt.


22. What happened to his uncle, what was going on with him?

His uncle got a very high fever, and died


23. What happened to some of his rehabilitated friends?

Some of his rehabilitated friends went back to being soldiers.


24. Do you think you would end up joining the rebels again? Why?

Yes I think so, because If they were seen walking around and were not part of the war they would get killed.


25. What was the only way of getting out of Freetown without being killed?

The only way of getting out of Freetown was by leaving in the dark, to not be seen so easily.

27. Why do you think the soldiers were so strict about searching them.

They were so strict about searching them because they needed money and wanted their money. They also did not

lie people leaving the country.


28. Was there any room on the bus for him?

No it was really packed, so he had to stand up.


29. Did he make it out of Freetown?

Yes


30. There have been many times were he has escaped death , why do you think that is so?

Yes I think he escaped death when he snuck on because he did not have 300 Sierra Leonian money.


31. What can he offer to the other people who have never experienced war?

He can offer little tip like not carrying around nice things, or having money hidden to give soldiers to leave you alone.


32. Tell me the story of the talking monkey. What is the significance of the story?

The story of the talking monkey was that a hunter was hunting a monkey and the monkey said that ig you shoot me your mother will die and If you don't your father will die. I did not see No significance in this story. People can have different views on it.


33. Tell me an important saying or story someone has once told you.

Someone once told me Hope for the best but expect the worst.

The U.S border patrol halts suspicious people at the border to see ig they are smuggling drugs, or if they are not legal in the U.S.

My three friends reconciled, even if they all have gotten with each others husbands at least once.


Residue: something that remains after a part is removed, disposed of, or used; remainder; rest; remnant.


The cigarette residue left a stain on the carpet

Predicament: an unpleasantly difficult, perplexing, or dangerous situation

Cheating on her husband left the lady in a bad predicament.


Apprentice: a person who works for another in order to learn a trade

Donald Trump had a show called The Apprentice, in where challenged a group a people who wanted to be his apprentice and work for him.

Chapter 20 questions &adobe



1. What was his vision of NYC? Where did he get his idea of NY?
He envisioned New York as a place where people shit each other on the street and got away with it, and no one walked on the street, rather people drove in their sports cars looking for night clubs and for violence. He got this vision from rap music.

2. Tell me what you think NYC is like. Why?
I think that New York is where people go and try to peruse their dreams. I think that it is like any other city, there are some pretty parts, and some ugly ghetto areas also.

3. How come he had no idea what winter was? Where did he learn about winter from?
He had no idea what winter was, because in Sierra Leone it was hardly cold and there was not snow.

4. Describe how he felt when he first felt NYC weather.
He was freezing, he had no idea how people survived this weather.

5. Snow and cold, lots of cars were huge culture shocks for Ishmael because he never experienced it, tell me a tell where you experience culture shock!
Well i never really been anywhere besides California and Nevada when I was a baby, but I have been to Arizona when I was like 9 and it was extremely hot ! I have also been to hemet and it is very hot there too. That was when S.D was not that hot.

6. Where are they staying?
They are staying at the Vanderbilt YMCA hotel on Forty-seventh Street.

7. What other children are there as well?
Yes, there was 57 children from 23 countries.

8. Why was he baffled by the food? Why do you think it was hard for him to adjust.
He was baffled by the food because he did not know what anything was, he also did not know any of the names. I think it was hard for him to adjust because he was born and raised in Sierra Leone and had certain customs, and ate food that he grew up eating.

9. What did he learn about some of the other children there?
He learned that most of the children there had a very difficult childhood and would return to it once they left New York.

10. Who is Laura Simms? Describe her and her job.
Laura was a short white woman with long dark brown hair and very bright eyes. She is a story teller.

11. Why didn’t he accept the winter jacket? Would you?
Well he did not accept the winter jacket years later probably because he had his own and figured out that he did not want to be wearing woman clothing. I would accept the sweater, i rather be warm.

12. Him and Madoka visit the Times Square, what does he see? Tell me 3 things that he talks about
He sees a lot of tall buildings, billboards advertising underwear, and music videos, a lot of lights and cars honking.

13. What was the conference about? How did he feel about the conference?
They would talk about solutions to the problems facing children in the different countries. Ishmael was hopeful, everybody was.

14. What is Ishmael speech about, what is your favorite sentence from his speech?
My favorite sentence of his speech was "I have been rehabilitated now, so don't be afraid of me. I am not a soldier anymore, i am a child"

15. Do you agree with his speech? Why
Yes I agree, well it is not if you agree or not, it is was he felt.
But I agree because I think it was nice how he said not to be scared of him anymore because he was not a child soldier anymore I am a child. I really liked his speech.

16. Tell me one experience you have had that has changed your life and you are still working on or dealing with.
One experience that has changed my life is me moving out of my moms. I can't say on here why I did but the reason why and me moving out has affected me in the better and the worse. I am still dealing with the consequences and not getting everything I want which really sucks !!!

17. How is music, and dancing a huge part of his life?
It is a big part of his life because he really enjoys it, and has fun doing it.

18. When did he leave NY?
He left New York on November 15, 1996.

19. Where was he going now?
He was going back to Sierra Leone.

20. What do you will happen in the next chapter?
Well I think he will go back to New York soon after, and live a happy normal life.

21. How will his life be different now in Sierra Leone?
Well he will eat different types of food, there is still war going on his country basically be around a different lifestyle.

22. Do you think that he will return to the group he was part of?
Yes i do !

23. Tell me time where you have experience growth from something negative.
Being old and not having a job !!!

The old man was baffled on why his wife cheated on him with a 17 year old.

The facilitators for helping people not do drugs were not doing their job.

I was in awe when i saw how beautiful Hawaii was.

I had to orient myself when i visited China, it was so different to what I was used to.

The college student was overwhelmed with all her homework.

The lady's were mesmerized after being hypnotized with the pendulum.


11. Aimlessly: without aim; purposeless

Sometime Cupid hits aimlessly and makes the wrong people fall in love.


12. Influential: having or exerting influence, esp. great influence
Oprah is an influential person to many people who see the nice things she does for others.
