Chapter 20 questions &adobe



1. What was his vision of NYC? Where did he get his idea of NY?
He envisioned New York as a place where people shit each other on the street and got away with it, and no one walked on the street, rather people drove in their sports cars looking for night clubs and for violence. He got this vision from rap music.

2. Tell me what you think NYC is like. Why?
I think that New York is where people go and try to peruse their dreams. I think that it is like any other city, there are some pretty parts, and some ugly ghetto areas also.

3. How come he had no idea what winter was? Where did he learn about winter from?
He had no idea what winter was, because in Sierra Leone it was hardly cold and there was not snow.

4. Describe how he felt when he first felt NYC weather.
He was freezing, he had no idea how people survived this weather.

5. Snow and cold, lots of cars were huge culture shocks for Ishmael because he never experienced it, tell me a tell where you experience culture shock!
Well i never really been anywhere besides California and Nevada when I was a baby, but I have been to Arizona when I was like 9 and it was extremely hot ! I have also been to hemet and it is very hot there too. That was when S.D was not that hot.

6. Where are they staying?
They are staying at the Vanderbilt YMCA hotel on Forty-seventh Street.

7. What other children are there as well?
Yes, there was 57 children from 23 countries.

8. Why was he baffled by the food? Why do you think it was hard for him to adjust.
He was baffled by the food because he did not know what anything was, he also did not know any of the names. I think it was hard for him to adjust because he was born and raised in Sierra Leone and had certain customs, and ate food that he grew up eating.

9. What did he learn about some of the other children there?
He learned that most of the children there had a very difficult childhood and would return to it once they left New York.

10. Who is Laura Simms? Describe her and her job.
Laura was a short white woman with long dark brown hair and very bright eyes. She is a story teller.

11. Why didn’t he accept the winter jacket? Would you?
Well he did not accept the winter jacket years later probably because he had his own and figured out that he did not want to be wearing woman clothing. I would accept the sweater, i rather be warm.

12. Him and Madoka visit the Times Square, what does he see? Tell me 3 things that he talks about
He sees a lot of tall buildings, billboards advertising underwear, and music videos, a lot of lights and cars honking.

13. What was the conference about? How did he feel about the conference?
They would talk about solutions to the problems facing children in the different countries. Ishmael was hopeful, everybody was.

14. What is Ishmael speech about, what is your favorite sentence from his speech?
My favorite sentence of his speech was "I have been rehabilitated now, so don't be afraid of me. I am not a soldier anymore, i am a child"

15. Do you agree with his speech? Why
Yes I agree, well it is not if you agree or not, it is was he felt.
But I agree because I think it was nice how he said not to be scared of him anymore because he was not a child soldier anymore I am a child. I really liked his speech.

16. Tell me one experience you have had that has changed your life and you are still working on or dealing with.
One experience that has changed my life is me moving out of my moms. I can't say on here why I did but the reason why and me moving out has affected me in the better and the worse. I am still dealing with the consequences and not getting everything I want which really sucks !!!

17. How is music, and dancing a huge part of his life?
It is a big part of his life because he really enjoys it, and has fun doing it.

18. When did he leave NY?
He left New York on November 15, 1996.

19. Where was he going now?
He was going back to Sierra Leone.

20. What do you will happen in the next chapter?
Well I think he will go back to New York soon after, and live a happy normal life.

21. How will his life be different now in Sierra Leone?
Well he will eat different types of food, there is still war going on his country basically be around a different lifestyle.

22. Do you think that he will return to the group he was part of?
Yes i do !

23. Tell me time where you have experience growth from something negative.
Being old and not having a job !!!

My friend accumulated the hello kitty MAC makeup collection.


3. Radiator: a person or thing that radiates
The ladies smile was radiant.


4. Baffled: to confuse, bewilder, or perplex
The old man was baffled on why his wife cheated on him with a 17 year old.

5. Facilitators: a person or thing that facilitates
The facilitators for helping people not do drugs were not doing their job.

The boys makeup was compelling.


7. Awe: an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like: in awe of God
I was in awe when i saw how beautiful Hawaii was.

8. Oriented: to adjust with relation to, or bring into due relation to surroundings, circumstances, facts, etc

I had to orient myself when i visited China, it was so different to what I was used to.

9. Overwhelmed: to overcome completely in mind or feeling
The college student was overwhelmed with all her homework.

10. Mesmerized: to hypnotize
The lady's were mesmerized after being hypnotized with the pendulum.


11. Aimlessly: without aim; purposeless

Sometime Cupid hits aimlessly and makes the wrong people fall in love.


12. Influential: having or exerting influence, esp. great influence
Oprah is an influential person to many people who see the nice things she does for others.
