ch.14&adobe



1. How has Ishmael changed?
Ishmael was changed because he did not care about killing people and he also did drugs.

2. What has he become addicted too? Why?
He was addicted to cocaine, brown brown, marijuana,and some white tablets that give you a lot of energy.

3. Describe how he felt when he tried all the drugs together?
When Ishmael took all the drugs together he began to perspire , his body shook, his sight also became blurred, and he lost his hearing for several minutes.

4. What is the difference between him and the rebels now? Are there any?
There is no difference between Ishmael and the rebels. They are exactly the same now.

5. Describe the activities they do.
The activities they do are doing drugs, watching movies, and killing people.

6. What does he think about killing now?
He think of it as something easy and a normal thing to do.

7. How were they able to watch movies?
They were able to watch movies by using a generator or sometimes a car battery.

8. How was he similar to Rambo?
They both killed people and used different techniques.

9. How has Alhaji and Ishmael changed?
They thought it was now cool to kill people, and they both did drugs.

10. Tell me a time where you completely changed to a different person, and why it could be good or bad.
I was a completely different person when i moved in with my dad, I became responsible.

11. What were some things they got from the villages they raided?
They got gallons of gasoline, marijuana, cocaine, clothes, shoes, watches, rice, dried fish, salt, gari, and a lot of other things.

12. What do they do to capture rebels?
They capture the rebels by surrounding the village they are staying at, and then then having gun fights.

13. Are they careful with civilians?
They are not careful with civilians, they always have a lot of "civilian casualties"

14. What was making Ishmael feel special?
He slit a mans throat and killed him slowly.

15. Do you think he is brainwashed? How does the lieutenant control them?
I do think he is brainwashed. The lieutenant controls them by brainwashing them and telling them the rebels killed their parents and are horrible people.

16. Describe the way they practice killing prisoners.
They practice killing prisoners by tying them up and slitting their necks or shooting them.

17. How did they celebrate each night?
They celebrated by doing drugs and watching movies.

18. Who won the contest? What was the reward?
Ishmael won the contest, his reward was given the rank of junior lieutenant.

19. Does he sleep anymore?
No he does not sleep anymore. He is to many drugs.

20. What do you think of Ishmael now?
I think he has to do what he has to do. It his not his fault, people brainwashed him.

Me doing good in school is for the betterment of my future.

The guy spoke on a megaphone to instill the information in everyone's head.

Eager:keen or ardent in desire or feeling; impatiently longing

The dog was extremely eager to eat his good.


Fulfilled:to carry out, or bring to realization, as a prophecy or promise

The couple fulfilled each others every need.

Ch.12&adobe


1. Describe the men they encountered as they walked.
The men were dark as charcoal and had really red eyes.

2. What is the setting like in the beginning of the chapter, and where are they?
They had been walking for about 2 days, he didn't really remember.

3. Describe what life was like in the village Yele, what did they do?
The village was always full of lively chattering and laughter. Soldiers would socialize with civilians. The civilians seemed like they were comfortable and felt safe.

4. Why did Ishmael distance himself from the games? What was going on with him?
He was to distracted with all the thoughts running through is head.

5. What did he dream? Tell me a dream you had that kept you from sleeping
He dreamed he had been shot in the head, as he was lying there a dog started licking his blood getting ready to eat him. I had dreamed about someone breaking into my house trying to kill my family and dog.

6. Describe Lieutenant Jabati.
He was a tall thin man with hardly any hair, his eyes were big, he also had full cheekbones, he was a quiet individual. His quietness had a forceful authority, all the men feared him or respected him.

7. Does Ishmael join the fight against the rebels? Would you?
Yes Ishmael joins to fight the rebels. I would also. There is a the same chance of dying whether or not he fights the rebels or not.

8. What does lieutenant tell the boys, to get them to see what the rebels have done?
He shows them two dead people who tried leaving the village and got killed by the rebels.

9. Do you think Lieutenant Speech was inspiring why?
Yes i do, it makes all the civilians feel as if they can stop the war, or try.

10. What was the training regime like?
They practiced stabbing bananas with bayonets. They also practices shooting. They also only had 60 seconds to eat.

11. What did they use the banana tree for?
It was used to help them practice stabbing with a bayonet.

1. Do you think Ishmael is safe with the soldiers?
I think he is safer than he was. He at least has a gun now.

2. What was the mood like in this village?
Everybody was happy, cheerful, they felt safe.

3. What “darkened the mood of the village”?
The soldiers preparing to fight.

4. What did the soldier do in the evenings?
They would clean their guns,smoked cigarettes and marijuana, some sat alone, while others gambled and joked with each other.

5. Why did Ishmael like busying himself with work all day?
To keep himself distracted

6. How did the memory of the soccer league matches make him feel?
He felt so happy that he felt every nerve in his body had awoken.

7. What did he do while the others played games in the village?
He would stare into space.

8. Why was he getting the migraines?
From stressing out, and everything he has went through.

9. Describe Lieutenant Jabati.
He was young, bald, and his countenance made him look much older. He had an intense face that look, even smiling, as if her were chewing something sour.

10. Why did Ishmael like reading Shakespeare?
It made him feel as if he was really good at speaking english.

11. What did it mean that only few of the soldiers returned to the village?
It meant that all the rest of the soldiers were killed.

12. What did the soldiers do with the prisoners
They shot them in the head.

13. What had happened to the body that was shown to the crowd?
The rebels killed them as they were trying to escape the village.

14. What are some actions of the rebels described by the lieutenant?
The rebels would force sons to have sex with their own mother, they would rip open pregnant ladies stomachs and kill the baby inside, they would also cut babies in half, and do other terrible things.

15. Where were women and children supposed to go? Men and boys?
Women were supposed to go to the kitchen, and men and boys were supposed to go to the ammunition depot.

16. Who were Ishmael’s tent companions?
Sheku and Josiah were Ishmael's tent companions, they were the youngest boys.

17. What happened to his tapes?
They were burned with all the rest of his belongings, which were just his pants.

18. How do you think the soldiers who were coming back from the front lines felt?

19. What did they tell the boys to brain wash them?
They would tell them to visualize the enemy, the rebels who killed your parents, your family, and those responsible for everything that has happened to you.

20. When he finally could think, what was he thinking about?


Agonizing- to suffer extreme pain or anguish; be in agony.

Getting stabbed is an agonizing feeling.

The Pretty lady got complemented so many times, she turned stuck up and annoying.











Latrines- A communal toilet of a type often used in a camp or barracks

Ishamael and the other civilians have to use latrines to go to the bathroom.

One of Jokers colleagues are Riddler.

There a various ethnicities throughout San Diego.



















Gruesome- causing great horror; horribly repugnant; grisly

The lady may have been rich, but she was still gruesome.
























Dilemma- a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives

It was such a dilemma when the married lady could not choose between her fiance or her ex husband.
















Megaphone- a cone-shaped device for magnifying or directing the voice, chiefly used in addressing a large audience out of doors or in calling to someone at a distance

The principle use his megaphone during the fire drill to make sure everyone heard him.


















Tarpaulin- a protective covering of canvas or other material waterproofed with tar, paint, or wax

The tarpaulin was helpful when there was a hole in the roof.























Dilapidated- to cause or allow (a building, automobile, etc.) to fall into a state of disrepair, as by
misuse or neglect (often used passively)

The dilapidated house was going to be knocked down in a few days, there was no use of it anyways.






















Countenance- appearance, esp. the look or expression of the face

The countenance on the crazy guys face changed every minute.

















Cherishing- to hold or treat as dear; feel love for

The expecting mother cherished her belly, because her baby was in there.

1. How did the boys grieve Saidu’s death?
He had a little burial in a coffin at the mans house in a table in the living room.

2. Who is Gasemu?
He was a notorious single man in his town.

3. What does Gasemu say about his family?
He says his family has been talking about him for days, and praying for his safety. Gasemu also said they have been looking for him

4. How did he feel when he thought of seeing his family again?
He got happy, and was impatient.

5. What happened as he was going down the hill?
They heard gunshots, dogs barking, and people screaming and crying.

6. Describe the village after the gunshots?
The village was was on fire, with bullet shells covering the entire ground. There was also dead bodies everywhere.

7. Why did Gaseu start screaming?
He began screaming because he saw more than twenty people all lined up face down with blood pouring from their bullet wounds.

8. What happened to the house Ishmael’s family stayed at?
It was burned down.

9. Why did he have a guilty feeling?
He had a guilty feeling because he hit Gaseu for what happend to his family.

10. Describe the 10 rebels they saw, how were they acting?
They were acting proud of killing people and accomplished, as if they did something good.

11. What were the rebels boasting about?
They were boasting about not letting anybody getting away.

12. Could you relate to any of the tragic events in this chapter or do you know some A-holes that are ruthless like the rebels?
Yes, well i don'y know them personally but murderers who kill and think of it as a good thing.

13. What happened to Gasemu in the end? Where did Gasemu tell the boys to go?
He had gotten shot by the rebels and dies. He told the boys to go to a place ouside villages where people processed coffee or other crops.

14. How do you think it mad Ishmael feel seeing a familiar face and being recognized?
He felt a little as ease, and hopefull that he would get to see his family soon.


15. What feeling do you think they were feeling knowing they were close to seeing their families?
Exitement, and impatient.

16. Have you ever been so close to getting something you want and have it slip away from you?
Yes, my friends or even family have flaked out on me when i am very exited, or they just cancel last minute.

17. Do you think any of the boys families made it out of the village?
I think so, well i hope so.

I hesitantly spent all my 150 dollars on just one dress.

As she motioned vary fast, she became tired after a while.

She emerged into the large body of water.

I grieved after my good friends death.

Ch.10&adobe





1. I think the boys felt welcomed and happy. He hasn't been welcomed much on his journey.

2. His grandmother would call him spider.

3. He remembered his grandmothers hands, his mothers embrace, his fathers laughter when they played soccer or how he would chase him with a bowl of water so that he can take a shower, and his brothers arms around him when they walked to school, and his little brother who looked exactly like him and would blame his brother when he did something bad.

4. They didn't want to hear the story of bra spider because they have heard it alot of times already.

5. The naming ceremony tells me that the people in the community are all close, and they all know each other.

6. A dog took their meat.

7. I think that Saidu had the worst circumstance with the rebels attack. He had to hear his sisters getting rape, and hear all the pain his family was going there, without being able to say a word, or his life would be in jeopardy.

8. No i don't think they were ghost , i think they were just young kids trying to escape the war too.

9. I think the dogs crying means that danger is coming.

10. I think hunger and sadness killed saidu.

11. Have you ever experienced feelings like he is describing at the burial? Explain.


1. What was unsettling about his journey was that he didn't know where his life was going.

2. The boys are always on the move because they were not wanted in many villages.

3. In the beginning of the chapter Ishmael is sad and pessimistic. There is nothing for him to look forward to.

4. He compares his journey with the moon.

5. Saidu basically just means that every time he accepts death he becomes sadder, and he is very depressed and does not feel alive anymore.

6. In Mende stories the spider is the character that tricks other animals to get what he wants but his tricks always backfire on him.

7. One of my fondest of my family is when everybody got along and celebrated holidays together.

8. The dog ate the meant.

9. Musa was with his father, and his mother was at the market, his father went to look for his mother, but as they all ran out of town his mother was left behind, his father went to look for her and got attacked.

10. Alhaji was at the river fetching water.

11. Kanei's family was escaping and lost his brothers and sisters during the chaos, and it was just him and his parents. The boat turned and he lost his parents as he was swimming to the other side.

12. The rebels had destroyed their houses, they ran towards the wharf to find their parents, but their parents were nowhere to be found.

13. They were unable to leave because they were packing for their journey.

14. Saidu's sisters were raped over and over.

15. When a crow falls out of the sky it is a sign of a curse or bad luck.

16. Dogs were crying because they senced something bad was going to happen.

17. Saidu died. They had a burial for him.

18. In my culture its nothing fancy we just have a burial.

19. A foreshadow of death i think was the draks barking and the crow falling out of the sky.

Murder scenes are always obstructing the scenes so civilians cannot go through.
