chapter 7&adobe





1.It happened unexpectedly one night, the rebels just walked into the village from out of nowhere.
2.Imam is the person who leads the prayer. The rebels captured him and bound his hands and feet with wire, and tied him to a iron pole n set him on fire.
3.The boys got separated because, Junior was in the verandah room where all five slept and his brother was outside sitting on the steps.
4.Well not really because it does not relate to me.
5.His main source of diet was oranges that he pick up in every village he slept in.
6.His trying to get to Bonthe. Because, its one of the safest place at that time.
7.The man and his family treated him like if he didn’t want them around them and didn’t trust them. Because, they couldn’t even trust a 12 year old boy anymore.
8.Because they didn’t expect the attack to be so fast.
9.The rebels tortured him and cut his arms and legs and tied him down to a iron pole and set him into fire but he died before he was completely burn.
10.No, they got separated when they attack the village before Bonthe.
11.Because, it’s a safe place at the time he was there.
12.The village was all burn down and parts of Imam were found in the iron pole and there was no signs to tell what the village name was.
13.Ishmael feels afraid of getting caught by the rebels.
14.Yes I have like climbing a rock wall in 6th grade.
15.Because the family though he was a rebel and didn’t trust him around them.
16.Ishmael probably feels bad by not being trusted by the family when his a good boy that just lose his whole family.

chapter 9&adobe



1.The boys hear the ocean. They hear the waves crashing. The ocean helps the boys stay at peace because its so beautiful and relaxing.
2.There were clusters of huts by the beach, but no one in the village, mortars were in the sand, rice spilling out of them, jerry cans leaked water, and fires were unattended.
3.Fishermen came out of behind the huts with machetes, fishing spears, and nets in their hands.
4.The fishermen attacked the boys because they heard rumors of young people believed to be rebels ere heading their way. I have been confused for something.. A lot of times I get out early and cops assume im ditching.
5.It was a bad punishment for the boys to get their shoes tooken away because the sun was beaming on the sand making it burn their feet. They were all crying without sound because they were to thirsty to make a sound.
6.The strange man took them into his hut. He have them food and helped them fix their feet.

7.Musa had a round face, he was short and bulky, with tiny round ears. His eyes were also very big.
8.Kanei had a long calm face, he was skinny and short with really dark hair. He also seemed to know how to say and handle certain situations.

9.Alhaji used gestures to elaborate when he spoke.
10.Jumah was always nodding his head agreeing to everything that Jumah said. Jumah used his head to gesture instead of his hands. Whenever he spoke he waved his head left to right, he also kept his hands crossed behind his neck like an old man.
11.Saidu and Moriba were very quiet. Saidu breathed hard as he walked with his large ears and when he was listening they stood up like a deer. Moriba played with his hands examining the lines of his palms and rubbed his fingers as he whispered to himself.

12.I would mostly identify myself with Kanei because when things are going bad I always try to make them better.
13.The host was very nice to the boys even if he never met them. I have had a host that was nice to me. My aunt is always nice to me when I go over.
14.The boys tried running away from the 12 men, but they were not fast enough. The villagers tied them up. They eventually got away again thanks to the cassettes he had in his pockets. They were not welcomed in the village though.
15.To surprise the chaser Ishamael started dancing to his rap cassettes.
16.The chief kept calling the boys devils.
17.The rap cassettes saved the boys from being killed.
One time my friends and I were drinking in a car and the cops parked right next to us and stayed there just looking, but luckily they drove off, and so did we ! !

1. I think he felt as if something was after him because he no longer feels safe, the rebels always end up attacking. I have felt this way, but I feel this way when I am doing something bad.

2. The images of all the death he has seen would not leave his mind. He saw heads chopped off by machetes, smashed on cement, rivers filled with just blood and a lot of other sad things.

3. He slept on a tree with branches that mad the branches like a hammock.

4. The food that kept him alive was some sort of ripe fruit that the birds kept eating. The fruit was like a lemon, with an outer layer of mixed colors of yellow and red.

5. His grandfather made a special medicine that was supposed to enhance the brain’s capacity to absorb a retain knowledge. The medicine was made with medicinal leaves and bark.

6. The most dangerous thing about the forest were all the wild animals like the wild boar.

7. I time I could not stop thinking was when I got in huge trouble by my parents. I was trying to figure out my plans for the future. A lot was going through my mind.

8. Ishamael’s life in the forest was difficult. He had to find food that wouldn’t kill him. He also had to be careful and aware of all the wild animals that could kill him.

9. The rhythm of the branches and actually seeing people drove his spirit alive.

10. He was able to tell what tribe they were from because of the marks on their cheeks and their features.

11. This quote means that they have seen so much ugly and bad things they kind of went crazy. They were forced to grow up because they had to take care of themselves and survive.

12. men were trying to kill them with machetes because there were rumors about “seven boys”, they thought they were killing people or causing trouble, but the men let them go when they realized they were just boys running away from the war.

1.The images kept making him walk faster, his body also twitched with fear, he also became dizzy. He was able to see the leaves swaying but he couldn't feel anything.

2.To keep himself occupied he finds things to do.

3.Ishamael does seem scared to be lost in the jungle, but when he trys to think of a way to leave he is to scared to think because he is probably safer in the forest anyways.

4.It is a risk to eat the strange fruit because he does not know if they are poisonous or not, but he figured if the birds eat them he can to.

5.The memories of his family made Ishamael sad. It makes him sad because he misses them and because they are not around anymore and it brings a lot of sad thoughts.

6.He used a particular type of grass. When he squeezed a lot of grass together foam would come out and it would leave his body clean and fresh.

7.Ishamael is very lonely. When he is lonely he starts thinking to much , he didn’t like thinking to much because every thought was a sad one. He would think about where his life was going and where his family and friends were.

8.Some dangers that are beginning to scare him are coming in contact with the wild animals.

9.I think when Ishamael thinks about his family it just makes him sadder, but I think it probably makes him stronger also because he was a bigger strive to survive.

10.He was in the forest for a little over a month.

11.He ran into 6 boys that he went to school with. There names were Alhaji, Saidu, Kanei, Jumah, and Moriba and Musa.

12.He was able to tell what tribe they were from because of the marks on their cheeks and their features.

13.One of the boys asked him a question a Ishamael did not reply, so the boy Kanei tapped him on the shoulder and told him everything will turn out ok later.

Chapter 6&adobe


1.Some advantages of being a group of six boys is that they can escape day to day troubles. This disadvantage was that they were more noticeable and looked suspicious since there were kids killing civilian.

2.Children were feared because there were rumors young boys were being forced by rebels to kill their families.

3.They avoided trouble by walking through the bushes so they wouldn’t be seen.

4.The consequence of the war was that nobody trusted each other anymore.

5.One of the boys saved the main character and his friends from being drowned. The boy was a classmate of his and said the boys were not spies.

6.The chief thought the boys were spies and he found some rap tapes. He questioned the main character about it why he had those tapes. The old classmate of his saved him by saying he wasn’t a spy and letting them go and offering them to stay at the village.

7.The main character and his friends escaped death because as they were walking a group of men with machetes ordered the boys to go with them. They were the securitys of the village. They tied them up and demanded to know if they were spies. What saved them is the rap tapes that ishmael (main character) had in his pocket. Ishmael told the chief he was from Mattru Jong and he would perform at talent shows. The chief called a boy who was from Mattru Jong and the boy recognized Ishamael and they untied Ishmael and his friends. Ishamael’s relationship with Jr is not the same. They both don’t really talk. Ishamael wants to know what Jr is thinking but he doesn’t know how to approach him.

8.Ishmael is remembering the times his brother would talk to him and ask him what was wrong. Now they are both so shocked and sad about the stuff they both have seen no one has talked to each other and ishmael wants to ask his brother if he is doing ok. The problem is that Ishamael doesn’t know when to break the silence.

9.The season is fall. The leaves from trees have fallen to the ground and changed color to brown.

10.They pour wine in the soil to thank the ancestors and the gods for providing fertile soil, healthy rice, and a successful farming year.

11.They had sat on a hill everyday most of the day and saw no sign of the rebels, but ishamael and his friends still no that the rebels were going to arrive.

12.They would clear a massive plot of land, everyday they would swing machetes at the trees and palms to cut them down.

13.He would get in a lot of fights or stone kids he couldn’t beat up, and since he didn’t have a mother at home ishamael and Jr were misfits of the community.

14.Well right now I kind of do consider myself a misfit because my mom and I have a really bad relationship and I live with my dad.

15.He would get in a lot of fights at school because he was very troublesome.

16.The significance of the end of this chapter is that after all the hard work they do to try and make their community back to normal to the rebels came and attacked AGAIN. Also Ishamael also is sad at the fact that he didn’t talk to his brother that day and that was the last time he saw him.

chapter 5&adobe


1.The main character was not eating so he was getting extremely skinny. He was able to feel and see his ribs. His joints were also weak.
2.They became irritable because they were weak from all the running they have done and they have not ate a decent meal in a long time.
3.Six boys were running away.
4.The main character and his friends took the little boys corn away and ate it.
5.The little boys mom felt bad for the boys and gave them some corn. I would have probably reacted the same, I would of understood.
6.The rebels showed up out of no where and pointed their guns. They were scaring them and were about to choose some of the boys to make them rebels. As they were making the chosen few rebels the rebels heard gunshots and the captured civilians ran away. Some got captured and they were beat or killed. The main character and his friends did not get captured though.
7.The rebels were not over 21, they were dressed casually with clothes they took from the people they captured. They also had a a red cloth tied on their head. They were not friendly.
8.The rebels shot the gun so close to the old man making fun of his reaction.
9.In their culture they have to be very respectful to their elders. My expectations in how to treat elders is just to treat them as I would treat anybody else.
10.In recruitment they have to kill someone so that they can become used to the blood.
11.The new recruiters were forced to kill someone. There has been times where I have been pressure to do something.
12.The main character escapes death because the rebels get distracted with some gunshots they heard. That gave all the captives time to escape.
13.They waited to talk until dawn because they were traumatized from everything they just went through.
14.The incident affected the boys by making them take a different look on life and the situation they were in.

ch.4&adobe


Slide 18
1.1.The towns are empty, food, bodies, peoples items were scattered everywhere.
2.2.They snuck back to get money to buy some food.
3.3.They saw dead bodies everywhere, scattered body parts, rotten food, and a lot of other stuff.
4.4.The houses were all torn apart and broken down.
5.5.They were happy because the money was exactly where it was left.
6.6.No they didn’t eat well. Nobody was selling food, they were trying to save it for themselves. They had to steal food from people while others were sleeping.
7.7.They had to steal food from others in order to survive.

It is logical that the war going on in the book is not going to end soon.

The characters in the book are far from being happy because of the war.

The main characters in the book do a lot of traveling to escape death.

In the book the main characters also sneak around trying not to be seen.

War can damage many people lives, it is very dangerous and can kill a lot of people.

1.The letter was from the rebels and that they were coming and wanted to be welcomed.
2.The RUF was the revolutionary United Front. They saw the message carved on someone's body.
3.Why didn’t the rebels come by the time they said they would? They didn’t come the time they said they would because they wanted to catch everyone by surprise.
4.Palampo means single. I haven't because I eventually I was going to find a boyfriend.
5.When the rebels came it was completely unexpected. There was chaos everywhere.
6.The carving meant that the RUF was coming and they wanted to be welcomed.
7.Chaos ! I chose this word because every time the rebels come everyone is running scared. No one can trust anybody.
8.He kept running because if he didn’t he would face death. He wouldn’t get tired because is very determined abbot surviving.

10.The rebels got their message across by carving RUF everywhere.

12.It was quiet, everyone was scared hiding.
13People were stepping all over eachother,others were getting shot as they tried to escape. Many more civilians died.

15.The boys all escaped, they ran for more than an hour.

1.1.Well someone has betrayed my trust to the fullest extent, I have a hard time trusting people now. Well actually just that person.
2.2.In this chapter the main character is remembering something that happened in the past, when he was a kid soldier.
3.3.He has been in NY for a little bit over a month. I think he will be okay, it is going to take some time though and maybe even some therapy.
4.4.Little boys in Sierra Leone are not spoiled with electronics they have to grow up a lot faster, school is not mandatory there. Little boys in the U.S are a lot different.
5.5.His memories are both good and bad. His bad memories are all from the war. His good memories are when he remembers his family and the good times they had.

Chapter 1 questions part 1 & 2 & adobe


1.As the refugees walked through their town they acted as if something plagued their mind. They were distraught from what they had seen.

2.The main character was twelve.

3.They were fascinated with rap and hip hop music. “I loved the dance, and particularly enjoyed learning lyrics, because they were poetic and it improve my vocabulary.”

4.They went to Mattru Jong to participate in a friends talent show.
On their trip they brought notebooks of lyrics cassettes of rap albums and slingshots. They wore baggy jeans and soccer shorts underneath them, sweatpants.

5.They also wore long sleeved shirts, sleeveless undershirts-shirts and soccer jerseys. They also wore three pairs of socks to make their shoes puffy.

6.He ran across the bridge with the other characters clothes.

7.His grandparents are caring and they worry about them.

8.When they arrived in Mattru Jong they stayed in the Verandahs room at Khalilou’s house. The room was small and it had a tiny bed.

9.They heard that the rebels had attacked.

10.They waited in Mattru Jong. They decided to go back to Kabati where there grandmother lived.

11.The main characters family is no where to be found. When the rebels attacked everybody went everywhere.

12.The warning they received was from a woman who spoke without looking at them. She said “Too much blood has been spilled where you are going. Even the good have fled that place.”

13.A car pulled up and a man came out and vomited blood, his arm was bleeding. A woman fell out of the car with blood coming out her ears. In the back of the van there were three more dead bodies.

14.They decided to go back to Mattru Jong because they saw to many dead people, and sad things, they also heard that the rebels were coming to Kabati.

15.Everyone's curfew way at 7:00 p.m, government troops made checkpoints.

16.The boys came up with the conclusions that the war would end in a few months.

17.To remind people to be on their best behavior and to be good to others. Also that no ones complains about the moon just when it gets to hot or too cold.


1.The difference between the main character and the other students was that he was into different things. He is curious about learning things that a different to him.

2.When he first encountered the war it was very new to him, he was just trying to survive, he was also saddened to see everything that was going on.

3.Western civilian is. .that it is kinds of empty

4.He liked Hip Hop because it amazed him how black fellows were able to speak English very fast and to the beat.

5.He was mesmerized by blacks on TV because they spoke English very fast and he enjoyed the music they sang.

6. The father rather them watch news.

7.I can relate to him. I love music and if I like the artist style I use their sense of style and reflect it on my choice of clothing or hair.

8.The main characters town was different from mine because the towns were small and they didn’t really rely on cars or buses they just walked, they also lived really close to a forest with wildlife.

9.His grandmothers name was Mamie Kpana she was very caring and truly loved her grandson.

10.His Grandpa was smart, everyone called him teacher. He was a well known Arabic Scholar and healer in the village beyond.

11.A sign of good luck was to wave with the right hand for good luck.

12.Schools were cancelled because the rebels had attacked close that afternoon and the gunfire caused everyone to run different directions.

13.Rebels are like soldiers. They kill people for the amusement and take over their terirtoy.Families get broken apart.

14.The family relationship is now very broken apart. The main character does not know what happened to most of his family. All he has left is his brother and his friends.

15.The lady means that too many people have already died and nobody is there.

16.One example of the hard life in the war was that it was normal to have very close members in your family killed right in front of you. One lady had her baby on her back. Her baby was shot as the lady ran for her life. Another example is that many little children lost there parents and were left alone crying and looking for there family. Another example is one man who carried his dead son and was acting as if his son were still alive. He kept saying “I will get you to the hospital my boy and everything will be fine”

17.The rebels were just going on a killing streak, killing everyone.

18.It was A revolutionary “Liberation” war from a corrupt government.

19.He dreamed he got shot on his side. He tried to crawl away but another soldier stood on top of him and shot him in the same place. Yes I have had some dreams that were hard to tell from reality. I always have those dreams.

20.One time I was not able to get an image out of my head was when I had seen a dog get ran over.
